I love the Amish. I mean that sincerely, not as a quirky aside. I visit friends in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania every single year, and a few years back I even went on Fox TV as an “Amish expert” to talk about their culture. (Yes, I was wearing a wig for that interview. Don’t ask, it’s a long story involving a some genetic issues that led to me losing my hair. Photos below, judge me gently.)

Now here’s why I’m writing about them today, and it has nothing to do with quilts or buggies.

If you know anything about Amish genetics, it’s usually the opposite of good news.

Amish communities are small and tightly closed, most descend from a tiny handful of 18th-century founding families, outsiders essentially never join, and everyone marries within that same small circle, generation after generation.

Geneticists call this a “founder effect”: in a small, closed population, whatever rare genetic quirks the original founders happened to carry don’t get diluted into a bigger gene pool the way they would anywhere else. They get amplified instead.

This is exactly why Amish communities have some of the highest documented rates in the world of certain rare, and often devastating, inherited conditions: Ellis-van Creveld syndrome, maple syrup urine disease, glutaric aciduria, a lethal form of microcephaly, and elevated cystic fibrosis and muscular dystrophy in some groups. It’s a well-documented pattern, serious enough that specialized clinics for Amish genetic health exist in places like Lancaster County and Ohio.
